What are POPs?

• Persistent Organic Pollutants :POPs are chemical substances that do not break down easily in the environment. 
• Bioaccumulation:They can accumulate in the fatty tissues of living organisms over time. 

POPs in Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating: – This is where they effect the house clearance industry, as almost every household has some form of them

• Flammable retardants:Many upholstered items, like sofas and chairs, used to contain decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE), a flame retardant that is now banned and a source of POPs. 
• Legal requirements:In the UK, local authorities are required to manage waste upholstered domestic seating potentially containing POPs. 
• Incineration:From January 1, 2023, this waste cannot be disposed of in landfill and must be incinerated – which has lead to an increase in costs, due to an increase in handling and processing.
